Medical research indicates that a range of illnesses are linked by overlapping nutritional, metabolic, digestive and immune issues. Addressing underlying causes can improve health, behaviour and concentration while reducing the need for medications and the risk of disease. Selecting and sequencing appropriate treatments is essential for best outcomes and saves time and money.
Allergies and nutritional deficiencies are often misdiagnosed as ADHD or behavioural disorders. Chronic infections often reoccur until germs are accurately identified and treated. Toxicity often drives both allergies and infections. The metabolic-immunologic-neurologic-digestive systems are all closely linked and require an integrative approach to achieve optimal mental and physical health.
Integrative care can help treat a wide range of symptoms that include;
ADHD, allergies, Asthma, Autism, anxiety, bedwetting, behavioural issues, chronic infections, depression, digestive disorder, dyslexia, dyspraxia, eczema, food sensitivities, motor coordination, reflux, sleeplessness.

The Metabolic System
9:30am - 10:20am
Dr Elizabeth Mumper (DVD)
The metabolism is a complex set of chemical reactions that occur in living organisms in order to create energy to maintain life. Understanding genetic polymorphisms, nutritional deficiencies, mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired detoxification, oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, cerebral hypoxia and impaired energy production is central to effective treatment of Autism and related neuro-biological disorders including allergies and ADHD.
Dr. Mumper is Medical Director of Defeat Autism Now! She is also President and CEO of The Rimland Center in Lynchburg, Virginia. She graduated magna cum laude from Bridgewater College and attended the Medical College of Virginia, did residency training at the University of Massachusetts and University of Virginia, and was invited to serve as Chief Resident of Pediatrics at UVA
Biomedical Treatments
10:20am - 11:15am
Many children with learning delay, ADHD and Autism have overlapping conditions of allergies, dyspraxia, dyslexia, eczema and a range of auto-immune issues. A variety of medical and neuro conditions can cause learning and behavioural problems including allergies, food sensitivities, nutritional deficiencies, toxicity, infections, digestive dysfunction, auditory, visual &/or sensory processing disorders and more.
Learn how Biomedical intervention that includes diet, nutrition, digestive health and detoxification, can support cellular health and in so doing improve and restore proper functioning of many body systems. The key is in addressing the core causes in the particular individual.
Speakers;
Dr. Richard Stuckey (Brisbane & Townsville, QLD), Dr. Nicole Avard (Newcastle & Central Coast, NSW), Dr. Lily Thomas (South Coast, NSW), Dr. Sinclair Bode (Adelaide), Dr. John Turtle (Canberra), Dr. Antony Underwood (Sydney), Dr. Robyn Cosford (Darwin, Perth), Dr. Braham Rabinov (Melbourne).
Dietary Intervention
11:45am - 12:45am
Julie Matthews (DVD)
Many childhood disorders including ADHD, allergies, asthma, and autism stem from similar underlying causes such as nutrient deficiencies, digestive disturbances, inflammation, immune system imbalances and poor detoxification. In this session, you will learn how the health of the body and mind are interconnected, how poor digestion and gut imbalances affect the brain, and the importance of nutrition to the healing of these systems. We will dispel many myths of mainstream nutrition, such as “fat is bad”-lowfat is good, “the diet” doesn’t work and additives are no big deal. We will identify foods that heal the gut, feed the brain, support the immune system and help to detoxify. Most importantly, we will cover how to help children (even picky eaters) enjoy these foods!
Julie Matthews is a leading US autism nutrition expert and Defeat Autism Now! lecturer. Julie specialises in biomedical diet and supplementation intervention, as well as healthy pregnancy. Her book, Nourishing Hope, and her work are based in scientific research and an understanding of the biochemistry of neurobilogical disorders and the role of nutrition to restore health
The Holistic Approach
2:15pm - 2:45pm
Local Chiropractor
Individuals with Mindd illness experience a range of symptoms that are often characterised by the same underlying issue of inflammation and oxidative stress. The body can be stressed in many different ways including food and environmental toxins, allergens, muscular-skeletal and emotional issues.
By addressing the 6 key factors to overall health (structural alignment, nutrition, emotions, allergies, toxicity and electromagnetic radiation) you can work towards optimal mental and physical health.
Neuro & Behavioural Therapies for Cognitive Development & Performance
2:45pm - 3:25pm
Dr. Marilyn Dyson or local specialist
Neuro-developmental disorders can affect a child’s perception of the world by altering their ability to hear, see, taste, touch, do and experience. Neuro therapies are critical to developing neural pathways and are best implemented once biomedicine has addressed biochemical imbalances that impact on neurotransmitters and cognitive function.
Properly selecting and sequencing treatments for SPD and other disorders (ADHD, Autism, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia) can greatly improve behaviour, literacy and overall performance. This lecture will give you an overview of primitive reflexes, auditory & visual processing, sensory integration and motor development.
Behavioural Therapies, Emotional Intelligence & Self-Esteem
3:25pm - 3:45pm
Anca Ramsden or local specialist
Children with neuro-biological disorders are often challenged in relating to others socially and emotionally. In the case of ASD, behavioural intervention is essential to help develop social and communication skills. A range of behavioural interventions (ABA, RDI, Sonrise, Bridges) can be even more effective once biomedicine has addressed biochemical imbalances.
In the case of children with mood & digestive disorders, learning delay, allergies and all neuro-biological illness, the children often do not have full access to one of the primary responses to stress; to feel comforted by another, such as a parent, sibling, friend, or mentor. Many behaviours are expressions of this anxiety and when the anxiety is lowered behaviour can improve. Parents, teachers and carers can learn how to stimulate emotional intelligence through a range of exercises and games.
Practitioners Training
2:15pm - 5pm
Neurobiological disorders are at epidemic levels and trained health professionals are in demand. Best treatment outcomes lie in a team of well-trained practitioners who understand how to take histories, read symptoms, run tests and effectively treat the gut (permeability, dysbiosis, inflammation, biofilms) and metabolism (genetic polymorphisms, nutritional deficiencies, mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired detoxification, oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, cerebral hypoxia and impaired energy production).
Participating practitioners will be listed on the Mindd website.

Nutritional Supplementation
What Is It?
Biomedicine focuses on the health of the cell in order to best support all body systems. The cells require a range of nutrients to work effectively. Nutritional Supplementation requires taking therapeutic doses of nutrients (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids) based on individual needs.
Ideally, people would get nutrients from the foods they eat. However, our nutrient-poor modern diet combined with low-nutrient farm soil makes this very difficult.
As the gut heals, supplementation may be reduced or eliminated. But in cases where there are ongoing dietary, metabolic and/or genetic issues, supplementation may be required long-term.
Nutritional supplementation is not a substitute for good diet.
Who Is It For?
Nutritional Supplementation can optimise cellular health and therefore works to both treat and prevent a range of conditions including but not exclusive to;
ADHD, Allergies, Anxiety, Asthma, Autism, Behaviour, Cancer, Celiac, Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Diabetes, Digestive Disorders, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Eating Disorder, Eczema, Food Intolerances, Heart Disease, Infections, Learning Delay, Obesity, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Pyroluria, Schizophrenia, Sensory Integration, Speech-Language Delay.
Children especially may benefit from supplements because it helps to ensure that the body and brain have essential nutrients during critical developmental periods.
What Are the Benefits?
According to the Biomedical model, Nutritional Supplementation supports cellular health by increasing the absorption of nutrients while blocking out toxins. The benefits may include improved metabolic, immunologic, neurologic and digestive function.
Nutritional Supplementation is designed to target individual needs and to treat the core cause of illness at the cellular level. It is important that a trained Biomedical practitioner oversee supplementation to ensure the patient is receiving appropriate supplements at appropriate therapeutic doses.
In some cases, supplements may reduce or eliminate the need for medications which reduces costs as well as the risk of potential side-effects.
Nutritional Supplementation may also reduce oxidative stress and inflammation which in turn could reduce symptoms of allergies, arthritis, asthma, ADHD, Autism and a wide range of disease.
What Are The Costs?
Costs of supplementation vary and are best assessed by a skilled Biomedical practitioner. They would likely include consulting fees, lab tests and the supplements.
Digestive Health
“All diseases begin in the gut” - Hippocrates
What Is It?
Our digestive system is designed to absorb nutrients and block out toxins. Nutrients feed into proteins, hormones, neurotransmitters, growth factors and other naturally occurring chemicals that support and direct all body systems. Toxins can interfere with or block these biochemical pathways.
If our digestive system is not working due to Gastro Intestinal Permeability (Leaky Gut), Dysbiosis and/or inflammation (link to disorders page) then the brain and body are adversely affected in many ways.
A well-trained biomedical practitioner would address digestive health in several ways including; Removing offending foods; introducing healing foods; treating bacterial, viral and fungal infections; recolonising beneficial microbes (bacteria and fungi).
The Gastro Intestinal tract is also considered our “2nd brain” as 70% of the neurotransmitters in our brain are also in the GI tract. So digestive health is directly linked to brain health.
Who Is It For?
Digestive Health can optimise cellular health and therefore works to both treat and prevent a range of conditions including but not exclusive to;
ADHD, Allergies, Anxiety, Asthma, Autism, Behaviour, Cancer, Celiac, Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Diabetes, Digestive Disorders, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Eating Disorder, Eczema, Food Intolerances, Heart Disease, Infections, Learning Delay, Obesity, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Pyroluria, Schizophrenia, Sensory Integration, Speech-Language Delay.
What Are the Benefits?
According to the Biomedical model, Digestive Health supports cellular health by increasing the absorption of nutrients while blocking out toxins. The benefits may include improved metabolic, immunologic, neurologic and digestive function.
Digestive Health may also reduce oxidative stress and inflammation which in turn could reduce symptoms of allergies, arthritis, asthma, ADHD, Autism and a wide range of disease.
Digestive Health may also help to reduce infections which tend to thrive when the body is in a weakened state.
Given that 70% of the neurotransmitters in the brain are also in the gastro intestinal tract, Digestive Health supports brain function and mental health.
What Are The Costs?
Costs of treating for Digestive Health vary and are best assessed by a skilled Biomedical practitioner. They would likely include consulting fees, lab tests, supplements, some books (with recipes), special foods and consulting from an allied professional (e.g. nutritionist).
Dietary Intervention
What Is It?
Dietary intervention is an important part of the Biomedical approach and should be overseen by an experienced practitioner. The practitioner can help you determine which diet is appropriate for the individual depending on gut health, nutrient profile, allergies, food sensitivities, metabolic issues, toxicity and genetic factors.
It is important that dietary intervention be done as part of a total biomedical approach that includes gut healing, supplements and/or detoxification.
Diets most commonly recommended by a biomedical practitioner include; Evolutionary Diet, Casein-Free/Gluten-Free Diet, Specific Carbohydrate Diet, Gut And Psychology Syndrome Diet, Body Ecology Diet and Elimination Diet.
Who Is It For?
Dietary Intervention can optimise cellular health and therefore works to both treat and prevent treat a range of conditions including but not exclusive to;
ADHD, Allergies, Anxiety, Asthma, Autism, Behaviour, Cancer, Celiac, Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Diabetes, Digestive Disorders, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Eating Disorder, Eczema, Food Intolerances, Heart Disease, Infections, Learning Delay, Obesity, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Pyroluria, Schizophrenia, Sensory Integration, Speech-Language Delay.
What Are Benefits?
An individualised diet can help improve cellular health by providing more nutrients and eliminating food toxins. From a biomedical viewpoint, cellular health is the core of disease treatment and prevention as it supports all body systems.
Diet can also improve brain function and strengthen the immune system by eliminating foods that a person cannot digest or metabolise.
Dietary Intervention can also help curb or eliminate unfriendly gastro intestinal microbes (virus, bacteria, fungi, parasites, worms) that inhibit digestion of nutrients, strain the immune system and adversely impact on the nervous system and brain.
By addressing the above issues, diet can help improve concentration, behaviour, speech and overall mental and physical health.
What Are The Costs?
Costs of Dietary Intervention vary and are best assessed by a skilled Biomedical practitioner. They might include consulting fees, lab tests, supplements, some books (with recipes), special foods and consulting from an allied professional (e.g. nutritionist).
Detoxification
What is it?
Detoxification is the process of ridding the body of known poisons that interrupt cellular processes. Heavy metals, pesticides, food additives, petrochemicals and by-products from germs are all poisonous to the human body. Foods you cannot metabolise and excessive supplements or medication may also be toxic.
Biomedicine regards toxicity as a key driver of disease because it impairs proper functioning throughout the body including the metabolic, immunologic, neurologic and digestive systems.
There are various methods of detoxification that a well-trained practitioner can recommend. Diet, supplementation, chelation, exercise, energy medicine and cleaning up the environment can all support detoxification.
Who is it for?
Detoxification supports cellular health and therefore works to both treat and prevent a range of conditions including but not exclusive to;
ADHD, Allergies, Anxiety, Asthma, Autism, Behaviour, Cancer, Celiac, Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Diabetes, Digestive Disorders, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Eating Disorders, Eczema, Food Intolerances, Heart Disease, Infections, Learning Delay, Obesity, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Pyroluria, Schizophrenia, Sensory Integration, Speech-Language Delay.
In sick people detoxification can lead to improved immunity. In a healthy person (with accumulating toxins), it can prevent disease.
Children can especially benefit from reducing toxic load (which can improve cellular health) during important periods of mental and physical development.
What are the benefits?
According to the Biomedical model, detoxification supports cellular health which in turn supports all body systems. The benefits may include improved metabolic, immunologic, neurologic and digestive function.
Detoxification may also reduce oxidative stress and inflammation which in turn could reduce symptoms of allergies, arthritis, asthma, ADHD, Autism and a wide range of disease.
Detoxification may also help to reduce infections which tend to thrive when the body is in a weakened state.
What are the costs?
Costs of Detoxification vary and are best assessed by a skilled Biomedical practitioner. They might include consulting fees, lab tests, supplements, books, special foods and consulting from an allied professional (e.g. nutritionist).
What Is Biomedicine?
Biomedicine is a form of Nutritional & Environmental medicine that focuses on optimising cell health in order to support the body’s numerous and interconnected systems
(metabolic, immunogical, neurological, digestive, endocrine).
Very simply, Biomedicine assesses the need of the individual patient (through testing of blood, urine, stool, hair, tissue) and prescribes individualised treatment to optimise nutrient intake (minerals, vitamins, amino acids, essential fatty acids) and maximize excretion of toxins (heavy metals, PCBs, bacterial by-products and all environmental toxins).
By focusing on the cell, the emphasis is on treating the cause (nutrient deficiencies and toxin overload) versus treating symptoms (headaches, joint pain, indigestion, depression, inattention, skin irritation, moodiness).
In general, Biomedicine identifies and treats 2 common and interrelated patterns in modern disease (heart disease, Autism, depression, cancer, asthma)
which are
Oxidative Stress
and
Inflammation
. Oxidative Stress is the body’s way of rusting. Inflammation is the immune system’s response to Oxidative Stress and its attempt to prevent the rusting.
How Does It Work?
A well-trained biomedical practitioner starts with a long first consultation that includes a thorough case history and assessment of symptoms. Typically lab tests (blood, urine, stool, hair, tissue) will follow so the practitioner can assess less visible patient needs.
In general there are 4 key areas;
Digestive Health
- Treatment often begins with the “gut” because it plays a vital role in metabolising and absorbing nutrients while staving off toxins.
Diet
– Individualised diets are often prescribed depending on gut health, allergies, food sensitivities, metabolic issues and genetic interplay.
Supplementation
- A range of nutrients may be prescribed based on individual needs. As the gut heals, some of these supplements may be reduced or eliminated. But in cases where there are metabolic and/or genetic issues, supplementation may be required long-term.
Detoxification
- There are numerous ways to detoxify including diet, supplementation, exercise, epsom salt baths and chelation. Most practitioners believe the choice of method depends on the degree of toxicity.
Who Is It For?
Everyone may benefit because Biomedicine both treats and helps to prevent disease. Biomedical principles maintain that poor cell health is behind all disease and providing nutrients, detoxing and eliminating infections may get to the root cause of many conditions including but not exclusive to;
ADHD, Allergies, Anxiety, Asthma, Autism, Behaviour, Cancer, Celiac, Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Diabetes, Digestive Disorders, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Eating Disorder, Eczema, Food Intolerances, Heart Disease, Infections, Learning Delay, Obesity, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Pyroluria, Schizophrenia, Sensory Integration, Speech-Language Delay.
Children especially may benefit from biomedicine because it helps to ensure that the body and brain have essential nutrients during critical developmental periods.
What Are The Benefits?
Biomedicine treats each individual according to their personal needs.
Biomedicine focuses on treating the core cause of illness such as nutritional deficiencies, toxicity and infections versus treating symptoms such as poor concentration, moodiness, fatigue or runny nose.
Biomedicine helps in disease prevention. By treating the cause of a current illness, you can prevent future disease that might arise if underlying conditions are not addressed.
Biomedicine treats holistically. By focusing on cellular health it supports the entire body.
Supplementing with zinc, for example, can help improve digestive and metabolic function. At the same time, Zinc can help treat acne and fussy eating.
Biomedicine can enhance neurological and behavioural therapies by improving cognitive function. This also serves to reduce length and cost of therapies.
Biomedicine recognises that many nutrients work best in combination. Magnesium for example, enhances the absorption of calcium. This is why diet (obtaining nutrients and their cofactors from food) is an important part of biomedicine.
Biomedicine recognises the limitations of science and our knowledge about the human body and works to support the sophisticated natural processes that have evolved over millions of years.
What are the costs?
Costs of Biomedical treatments vary and are best assessed by a skilled Biomedical practitioner. They would likely include consulting fees, lab tests, supplements, some books (with recipes), special foods and consulting from an allied professional (e.g. nutritionist).
