Integrative Solutions for Optimal Development, Treatment & Prevention
Allergies, ADHD, Autism, Learning Delay, Chronic Illness
For carers, educators and health professionals
RACGP QA & CPD
Would you ask a child with a broken leg to run faster? Asking a child with ADHD, learning delay, Autism or even allergies to sit still or study harder is equivalent if there is an underlying medical condition.
Find out how Integrative Healthcare that includes biomedicine, allied therapies and neuro-development treats the whole person and helps a child reach their full potential and prevent disease. The key is an individualised approach by a trained practitioner and case management by well-informed carers.

Medical research indicates that a range of illnesses are linked by overlapping nutritional, metabolic, digestive and immune issues. Addressing underlying causes can improve health, behaviour and concentration while reducing the need for medications and the risk of disease. Selecting and sequencing appropriate treatments is essential for best outcomes and saves time and money.
Allergies and nutritional deficiencies are often misdiagnosed as ADHD or behavioural disorders. Chronic infections often reoccur until germs are accurately identified and treated. Toxicity often drives both allergies and infections. The metabolic-immunologic-neurologic-digestive systems are all closely linked and require an integrative approach to achieve optimal mental and physical health.
Integrative care can help treat a wide range of symptoms that include;
ADHD, allergies, Asthma, Autism, anxiety, bedwetting, behavioural issues, chronic infections, depression, digestive disorder, dyslexia, dyspraxia, eczema, food sensitivities, motor coordination, reflux, sleeplessness.
Carers Session
9am - 5pm
Intro & Recovery Story
9am - 9:30am
Local parents will detail their recovery stories with focus on symptoms, assessment and effective treatments you can find locally.
Biomedical Treatments
9:30am - 10:20am
Dr Antony Underwood
Many children with learning delay, ADHD and Autism have overlapping conditions of allergies, dyspraxia, dyslexia, eczema and a range of auto-immune issues. A variety of medical and neuro conditions can cause learning and behavioural problems including allergies, food sensitivities, nutritional deficiencies, toxicity, infections, digestive dysfunction, auditory, visual &/or sensory processing disorders and more.
Learn how Biomedical intervention that includes diet, nutrition, digestive health and detoxification, can support cellular health and in so doing improve and restore proper functioning of many body systems. The key is in addressing the core causes in the particular individual.
Morning Tea
10:30am - 11:00am
Dietary Intervention
11:00am - 12:00am
Julie Matthews (DVD)
Many childhood disorders including ADHD, allergies, asthma, and autism stem from similar underlying causes such as nutrient deficiencies, digestive disturbances, inflammation, immune system imbalances and poor detoxification. In this session, you will learn how the health of the body and mind are interconnected, how poor digestion and gut imbalances affect the brain, and the importance of nutrition to the healing of these systems. We will dispel many myths of mainstream nutrition, such as “fat is badâ€-lowfat is good, “the diet†doesn’t work and additives are no big deal. We will identify foods that heal the gut, feed the brain, support the immune system and help to detoxify. Most importantly, we will cover how to help children (even picky eaters) enjoy these foods!
Julie Matthews is a leading US autism nutrition expert and Defeat Autism Now! lecturer. Julie specialises in biomedical diet and supplementation intervention, as well as healthy pregnancy. Her book, Nourishing Hope, and her work are based in scientific research and an understanding of the biochemistry of neurobilogical disorders and the role of nutrition to restore health
A Holistic Approach to Autism & Neuro-Developmental Disorders
12:00 - 12:45pm
Sue Labrie
Individuals with Mindd illness experience a range of symptoms that are often characterised by the same underlying issue of inflammation and oxidative stress. The body can be stressed in many different ways including food and environmental toxins, allergens, muscular-skeletal and emotional issues. By addressing the 6 key factors to overall health (structural alignment, nutrition, emotions, allergies, toxicity and electromagnetic radiation) you can work towards optimal mental and physical health.
The Holistic Approach
12:45pm - 1:45pm
Neuro & Behavioural Therapies for Cognitive Development
1:45pm - 2:25pm
Dr. Marilyn Dyson
Neuro-developmental disorders can affect a child’s perception of the world by altering their ability to hear, see, taste, touch, do and experience. Neuro therapies are critical to developing neural pathways and are best implemented once biomedicine has addressed biochemical imbalances that impact on neurotransmitters and cognitive function.
Properly selecting and sequencing treatments for SPD and other disorders (ADHD, Autism, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia) can greatly improve behaviour, literacy and overall performance. This lecture will give you an overview of primitive reflexes, auditory & visual processing, sensory integration and motor development.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER-Dr. Martha Herbert
A Whole Body Approach to Autism & Neuro-Developmental Disorders
2:25pm - 4:00pm
Dr Martha Herbert, MD, PhD
Brain changes in autism and other neuro-developmental disorders are due to an interaction of "hardware" (structural changes) and "software" (functional changes) that are influenced by body physiology. Behaviors defining autism and other conditions can come from various versions of these interactions. Treatment depends on a) identifying biologically distinct subgroups and b) identifying "software" that we can modify when it makes sense to increase constructive options.
Dr Martha Herbert, MD, PhD
Dr. Martha Herbert is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, a Pediatric Neurologist with subspecialty certification in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities at the Massachusetts General Hospital, a Principal Investigator, a member of the MGH Center for Morphometric Analysis, and an affiliate of the HST-MGH Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging. Her background in pediatric neurology, evolutionary biology and history of science has influenced her orientation toward systems biology, brain connectivity and brain-body interrelationships.
Behavioural Therapies, Emotional Intelligence & Self-Esteem
4:00pm - 4:30pm
Anca Ramsden DVD
Children with neuro-biological disorders are often challenged in relating to others socially and emotionally. In the case of ASD, behavioural intervention is essential to help develop social and communication skills. A range of behavioural interventions (ABA, RDI, Sonrise, Bridges) can be even more effective once biomedicine has addressed biochemical imbalances.
In the case of children with mood & digestive disorders, learning delay, allergies and all neuro-biological illness, the children often do not have full access to one of the primary responses to stress; to feel comforted by another, such as a parent, sibling, friend, or mentor. Many behaviours are expressions of this anxiety and when the anxiety is lowered behaviour can improve. Parents, teachers and carers can learn how to stimulate emotional intelligence through a range of exercises and games.

Putting It Into Practice
- Biomedical Intervention for Allergies, ADHD, Autism, Learning Delay, Chronic Illness
Neurobiological disorders are at epidemic levels and trained health professionals are in demand. Best treatment outcomes lie in a team of well-trained practitioners who understand how to take histories, read symptoms, run tests and effectively treat the gut (permeability, dysbiosis, inflammation, biofilms) and metabolism (genetic polymorphisms, nutritional deficiencies, mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired detoxification, oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, cerebral hypoxia and impaired energy production).
Integrative care can help treat a wide range of symptoms that include;
ADHD, allergies, Asthma, Autism, anxiety, bedwetting, behavioural issues, chronic infections, depression, digestive disorder, dyslexia, dyspraxia, eczema, food sensitivities, motor coordination, reflux, sleeplessness.
Participating practitioners will be listed on the Mindd website.

About TRANSCEND
TRANSCEND is a network of like-minded researchers and clinicians devoted to pooling and integrating brain and body knowledge and research to help people with autism and related neuro-developmental disorders. Partnering in all research and treatment efforts will speed our progress toward understanding how best to help and support each person with ASD and everyone in their lives.
At TRANSCEND, we are linking efforts in a common framework to unite measures across multiple levels including brain structure (MRI), brain function (EEG, MEG, fMRI), metabolism (metabolomics, biochemistry, immunology, toxic body burden) along with genetic and behavioral measures. By investigating FUNCTIONAL as well as STRUCTURAL MEASURES across BIOLOGICAL and COGNITIVE levels while investigating processes of change, improvement and recovery, the full potential of TRANSLATIONAL research can be achieved for neurodevelopmental disorders.
We are interested in alleviating the components of suffering of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders so the creativity can more fully express itself. Some children are significantly improving their quality of life; this mandates studying and optimizing treatments now.
TRANSCEND stands for Treatment Research and NeuroSCience Evaluation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders. We aim to contribute to identifying and improving treatment approaches by optimizing measurements that can identify treatment targets and detect changes from treatment. Our program includes:
TRANSCEND Brain Research Program
TRANSCEND Body Biomarker Program
TRANSCEND Treatment Research Program
TRANSCEND Translational Research Program
TRANSCEND, based at the Center for Child and Adolescent Development at Cambridge Health Alliance, Harvard Medical School, utilizes the imaging facilities of the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging of Massachusetts General Hospital-Charlestown.
