Speaker Topic
Dr. E. Mumper (Co-Chair DAN!)

8:30-9:30

Autism and Paediatric Illness from a Cellular Perspective

Autism research is pointing to a multi-system breakdown due to environmental toxins effecting those with genetic susceptibility.

Dr. Mumper will review the basic biochemistry behind Autism and explain how this biochemical imbalance is associated with other paediatric disorders and illness where metabolic, immuno, neurological and digestive systems dysfunction. The talk will focus on how toxicity and deficiencies in minerals, amino acids and enzymes lead to a breakdown in methylation and sulfation pathways contributing to oxidative stress. Numerous childhood disorders and illness including; asthma, eczema, chronic ear or upper respiratory infections, allergies, food sensitivities, malabsorption, learning and language delay, behavioural disorders and disease are associated with metabolic and immune dysregulation. Dr. Mumper will also touch on why siblings and family members are at risk of related disorders and illness.

Dr. Mumper is a general Paediatrician, Co-chair DAN! (Defeat Autism Now! Advisory Committee), CEO of Advocates for Children and has faculty appointments at the University of Virginia and the Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Her clinical research includes analyzing intestinal biopsies in children with Autism and correlating gut pathology with methylation and immune abnormalities.

S. Jill James, PhD

9:30-10:30

Oxidative Stress in Autism and Other Paediatric Disorders

Dr. James will present findings from her ground-breaking research that concludes that autistic children have a decrease in the active form of glutathione that makes them more vulnerable to oxidative damage and less able to excrete heavy metals. Dr. James’ research is indicating that intracellular oxidative stress may be central to the neurologic, immunologic, and gastrointestinal dysfunction associated with autism as well as pathology associated with Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis and childhood obesity. She will review the pathways of methionine transmethylation and transsulfuration to explain the metabolic origin of the abnormal metabolic profile in these children and present preliminary results on effective intervention strategies.

Dr. James is a nutritional biochemist who has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers. She has over 20 years research experience in abnormal folate metabolism and disease susceptibility. Her research has focused on defining gene-nutrient interactions that increase susceptibility to cancer, Down Syndrome and most recently, Autism.

Dr. James is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Director of the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Research Institute. She received her B.S. degree Phi Beta Kappa from Mills College, and her Ph.D. degree in Nutritional Biochemistry from UCLA.

Dr. James has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers with a focus on gene-nutrient interactions.

10:30-11 Break/Q& A
Dr. N. O’Hara (DAN!)

11:00-12:00

Gut Dysfunction & Neuro Disorders

Gastro intestinal dysfunction is a key component of many paediatric neurodevelopmental disorders due to the gut-brain axis. The brain and digestive tract share many of the same neurotransmitters and in turn effect metabolism, immunity, and hormones throughout the body. A dysfunction in any one system can trigger many systems to dysfunction, leading to a plethora of disorders and illness. Dr. O’Hara’s talk will cover hypochlorydria, pancreatic and enzyme deficiency, intestinal permeability, small bowel bacterial overgrowth, viral infection, food allergies, dysbiosis, inflammation and oxidative stress. Symptoms of systems-wide dysfunction can include; asthma, eczema, food sensitivities, hyperactivity, poor concentration, behavioural issues, language delay, irregular bowels and more. The talk will also cover effective ways to alleviate pain, inflammation and dysfunction in the individual.

Dr. O’Hara is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine. She is a speaker at DAN! conferences and an instructor for DAN! physician’s training workshops . Her practice in Wilton, Connecticut is dedicated to the integrative care of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride

12:00-1:00

Gut and Psychology Syndrome

Research into Autism and learning disorders is revealing that brain-gut disorders run in families for a variety of genetic, biological and dietary reasons. Dr. Campbell-McBride very effectively outlines the genetic-dietary link between Autism, ADD, ADHD, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Depression and Scizophrenia.

Dr. Campbell-McBride successfully combined her knowledge of biochemistry and nutrition to effectively treat her own autistic son. Her book, GUT AND PSYCHOLOGY SYNDROME, reveals the true connection between nutrition and brain function and explains why today’s generation of children has the highest incidence of learning disabilities and behavioural disorders

Dr. Campbell-McBride has a degree in Medicine (with honors) from Russia and Postgraduate degrees in Neurology and Human Nutrition from the U.K. Her Cambridge Nutrition Clinic specializes in nutrition for people with digestive, immune system, learning and behaviour disorders. Dr. E. Varipatis

3:00-4:00

Toxicity & Paediatric Illness

Evidence is mounting that Autism and other childhood disorders and illness are a consequence of environmental toxins in our air, water, food, consumer products, and medications. An Autism Research Institute survey among parents found that heavy metal chelation yielded the most visible results including improved speech, behaviour and digestive function. Dr.Varipatis will discuss which heavy metals are found in ASD children, their source, the symptoms they create, and the most effective chelating agents. Protocols for Orthodox medical chelation such as DMPS, DMSA, EDTA will be covered as well as more natural detoxing through diet, supplements, energy medicine and lifestyle.

Dr. Emmanul Varipatis is a general practitioner at Your Health in Manly, NSW where he specialises in Clinical Metal Toxicology and Chelation therapies and treatment of Chronic Fatigue, digestive disorders and Autism Spectrum. He is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Nutritional Medicine, and is Board certified in Clinical Metal Toxicology.

4:30-5:30

Impaired Synchronization of Brain Activity

Autism, ADD/ADHD, speech and language delay, depression and behavioural disorders all share a common lack of synchrony in brain function. Methods that improve synchronization include; D4 receptors, folate-dependant methylation, diet, metabolism, Omega 3 and neuro-feedback. The sequencing and choice of therapies is critical and must be managed by an experienced practitioner.

Jacques Duff is founder and Director of the Behavioural Neurotherapy Clinic in Melbourne where they combine Orthodox medicine, diet and neuropsychology to treat children with ASD, ADHD/ADD and other learning and behavioural problems.

Mindding Our Children Benefit Dinner

Mindd Foundation is pleased to invite you to Mindding Our Children Benefit Dinner and Auction in support of effective biomedical and integrative treatments for ADD, Allergies, Autism*, Asthma, Learning Delay and chronic illness**.

Mindd Foundation is working hard to bring effective treatments to children in need by 1) training practitioners 2) raising awareness of treatments and trained practitioners among families in need.

The benefit dinner, hosted by Rachel Ward, promises to be entertaining and enlightening. Dr. Elizabeth Mumper, co-chair Defeat Autism Now!, will also present on why today’s schools are filled with Ritalin bells, puffers, nut-free policies and special programs for learning delay. Wendy Harmer will run a lively auction.

There is something going on with our children’s health and the private sector needs to step up to the plate until government allocates the necessary resources. Please consider filling a table of 10 at $175/plate and put some thought into who you could invite; friends whose children have issues, politicians and business leaders, grandparents that need convincing about the “special diet”.
