Summary: This paper looks at the role of fatty fish in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD can be defined as an eye disease that causes loss of vision whereby blurred vision is a main symptom. Literature reports the risk factors as age, genetics and smoking. Nutrition has also been implicated, as consumption of fatty fish is thought to improve many overall functions in the body and reduce inflammation. The objective of this article was to review the current evidence on the role of fatty fish in AMD and found there is strong evidence that improving diet quality and including more foods that are needed by the retina such as fatty fish play an important role. Avoiding foods that cause oxidative damage and inflammation also proved to play an important role in preventing AMD. The paper concluded that targeted nutritional advice for those at risk of AMD is essential.
Abstract:
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive retinal disease that is a leading cause of visual impairment and severe vision loss. The number of people affected by AMD is increasing and constitutes a huge worldwide health problem. The beneficial effects of fish consumption on AMD have been revealed over the past decades, and in this review, we summarize the beneficial effects of fatty fish on AMD and its mechanism of action. Fatty fish affects the development of AMD by inhibiting neovascularization, interacting with retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, displacing Omega-6, and inducing cellular responses. It is recommended that people at high risk or with moderate or more severe AMD should consider eating more fatty fish in addition to maintaining a healthy lifestyle of weight control and smoking cessation and the need to promote new models of personalized AMD prevention and treatment.
