Dr Martha Herbert, PhD

Asst Professor Neurology, Harvard Medical School, Director TRANSCEND Research Program

Dr. Martha Herbert, author of The Autism Revolution, is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, a Paediatric Neurologist with subspecialty certification in Neurodevelopment Disabilities at the Massachusetts General Hospital, a Principal Investigator and an affiliate of the HST-MGH Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging. She is director of the TRANSCEND* research program, a multimodal brain imaging and biomarker research program. Her background in paediatric neurology, evolutionary biology and history of science has influenced her orientation toward systems biology, brain connectivity and brain-body interrelationships. Her research program includes studying what makes some autistic brains unusually large, how the parts of the brain are connected and coordinated with each other, and how we can develop measures sensitive to changes in brain and body function that could result from treatment interventions.  She is now running the first study of the emergence of medical and brain symptoms in young infants at high risk for autism, and building a research platform for studying the relationship of brain metabolism to brain signaling abnormalities. Professor Michael Fenech

Adjunct Professor, University of South Australia CSIRO Food and Nutritional Sciences

Dr Michael Fenech is renowned internationally for his research in nutrition and genetic toxicology and for developing the cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay which is a gold standard method used internationally to measure DNA damage in human cells. His key goal is to determine the nutritional requirements for DNA damage prevention.

He was awarded the Flinders University’s Convocation Medal in 2007, the Alexander Hollaender Award (USA) in 2008 and the honorary title of Adjunct Professor (University of South Australia) in 2009 for his leadership/contributions to environmental/public health sciences internationally. His publications have been cited 6,500 times (917 times in 2008, 890 times in 2009) and his H-index is 41.

Dr. Nancy O'Hara

Certified Paediatrician

Until January 2010, she was the Assistant Medical Director for Defeat Autism Now! ® Physican Training and the Physician Mentoring Director for Defeat Autism Now! ® in Europe. Prior to her medical career, Dr. O’Hara taught children with autism. She graduated magna cum laude from Bryn Mawr College and as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society from the University of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine. She earned a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. After residency, chief residency and general pediatric fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. O’ Hara was in private practice for 7 years. Dr. O’Hara has worked with Dr. Sidney Baker and other practitioners in the research and care of children with autistic spectrum disorder for many years. For the last 10 years, she has dedicated her practice to the integrative and holistic care of children with neurodevelopmental disorders and Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

S. Jill James, PhD

Nutritional Biochemist

S. Jill James, PhD is a nutritional biochemist who has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers. She has over 20 year’s research experience in abnormal folate metabolism and disease susceptibility. Her research has focused on defining gene-nutrient interactions that increase susceptibility to cancer, Down Syndrome and most recently, Autism.

Dr. James is a Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Director of the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Research Institute. She received her B.S. degree Phi Beta Kappa from Mills College, and her Ph.D. degree in Nutritional Biochemistry from UCLA.

Woody McGinnis

MD directs tissue studies for the Autism Research Institute, San Diego, California

Woody McGinnis MD directs tissue studies for the Autism Research Institute, San Diego, California. He practiced general medicine in the United States, then at mid-career began studying the role of nutrition and toxins in human behavior. Cross-disciplinary investigations coordinated by McGinnis have produced a wealth of original data, including first direct evidence of oxidative modification of brain in autism. Major reviews establish McGinnis as a leading expert on the role of Mauve Factor in mental illnesses, and on Oxidative Stress in autism. Publication of the NTS brainstem hypothesis for autism in December, 2013, culminates five years of deliberation from his base in Auckland, New Zealand.
