Calming Stress with Transdermal Magnesium: Of all the many miraculous things attributed to magnesium, the biggest impact it has is to fortify us against stress so that we can recover better. Magnesium is a primary enzyme supporter and muscle relaxer. It has a critical role, together with water, in hydration status, electrical charge and production of ATP – our cellular energy currency. Low magnesium leads to low energy, low pH acidity, low electrical charge, more oxidative stress and free radical damage, inflammation, pain or hyperactive states. Magnesium deficiency can even cause excessive urinary loss of magnesium, which weakens our immune defences even more. The lower the cellular magnesium level, the more acute the stress symptoms become, the more adrenaline we pump and the more we can get stuck in sympathetic ‘fight or flight’ mode. The high concentrations of tablets or powders, even if they can be digested with enough stomach acid, still tend to be mostly excreted by the digestive system rather than absorbed via the gut wall and taken up by tissue cells. This is despite chronic deficiency states. Oral supplements are even less tolerated by those who have gut disorders and can cause bowel irritation and diarrhea.
